Correcting Scapular Anterior Tilt in Athletes: A Comprehensive Approach
When looking to reset and limit a player’s anterior tilt of the scapula, it’s essential to start with a deep understanding of the anatomy and function of the muscles involved in scapular movement. The scapula (shoulder blade) relies on a network of muscles to maintain proper positioning, and any imbalance can lead to issues with movement efficiency, pain, or even injury.
Understanding Muscle Imbalances
Muscle length and tension are critical factors in determining how a muscle affects joint positioning. Over time, due to repetitive movement patterns or poor posture, some muscles may become shortened and tight, while others may lengthen and weaken. This imbalance alters their ability to generate force effectively and maintain optimal scapular positioning.
Keys to being a successful coach
Being a successful strength coach involves much more than just knowing the best exercises and lifting techniques. The smaller details and the way you interact with people play a crucial role in your effectiveness and the success of your athletes. Here are some key points to consider:
1. Build Rapport and Trust
Listen Actively: Make a conscious effort to listen to your athletes. Understand their goals, concerns, and feedback. This helps build trust and shows that you care about their individual needs.
Show Empathy: Understand that everyone has bad days. Be supportive and encouraging, especially when someone is struggling.
Be Approachable: Create an environment where athletes feel comfortable coming to you with questions or concerns.
Simple yet productive interview questions:
If I could only ask a potential employee a few questions, I would focus on aspects that reveal their mindset, skills, and compatibility with the company culture:
"Can you describe a situation where you faced a significant challenge at work? How did you approach it, and what was the outcome?"
This question helps assess problem-solving skills, resilience, and how they handle pressure.
Why Vectors Matter
A vector is a quantity having direction as well as magnitude, especially as determining the position of one point in space relative to another. In other words the direction in which you apply force into the ground directly correlates as to how you will be able to move and how fast you will be able to move.
Sleep Part II
This is where my second suggestion comes in to play. Perform your night time routine at least 90 minutes before bedtime. If it's showering, brushing your teeth or prepping your lunch, anything that would cause you to turn your lights on do it ahead of bed time.
Sleep Part I
What research shows us is some people are Larks those who prefer to go to bed before 10pm and prefer to wake up before 7am. We then have Owls who (please make an owl noise when you say that who) prefer to go to bed after midnight and wake up after 9am. An lastly we have Robins who go to bed between 10-12pm and wake up around 7-8am.
How to properly set a goal
I will say the first few years I sucked at writing goals! I would either make them impossible to reach or would reach them in a shorter period of time than expected. I remember this past year when we moved into our new Milford space, I had a good two-week period where I couldn’t see what was next. This really scared me as for the past five years I had always had a clear vision and goals to lead me. Now I had nothing and had to dive deep into what I really wanted out of the business.
Starting from nothing
Flipping back to that fateful Saturday in Indianapolis where I was evaluating and creating a program for an out-of-town client from Cincinnati: The dad looked at me and said “we have trained everywhere in Cincinnati and no one has ever done anything like what you just did.” I then proceeded to ask “really, where have you trained?" thinking he wouldn’t list any of the places I considered the industry leaders in the Cincinnati area. But, sure enough, he listed all of them! We concluded our meeting and I remember making a mental note of what he had said. I was on to something – no one was creating custom programs for athletes using data gathered from a robust evaluation tailored to the individual athlete and based on their sport.
